Sandel argues that to overcome the polarized politics of our time, we must rethink the attitudes toward success and failure that have accompanied globalization and rising inequality. He highlights the hubris a meritocracy generates among the winners and the harsh judgement it imposes on those left behind. He offers an alternative way of thinking about success, more attentive to the role of luck in human affairs, more conducive to an ethic of humility, and more hospitable to a politics of the common good. For August 14 on Zoom: Livewired by David Eagleman. We have a list of books read at www.bigideasreadinggroup.com/BIRG2.html. 3p Howard’s Second Wake. Howard Ingram was a life member of Mensa and a frequent contributor to RGs and Asilomar. We will celebrate his life at Plymouth Jazz & Justice Church (UCC), 424 Monte Vista Ave., Oakland 94611. There will be photos and Howard memorabilia for everyone to reminisce over, live music, pot-luck food, and drink to enjoy just as Howard would want you all to do. 2p Speaker Meeting: “Graphologists”. Adam Brand will outline what graphologists look at, whether or not the subject is scientific, and explain what signatures can tell about a person. In the modern world there is very little writing available for examination, apart from signatures and occasional hand written notes. Yet there is a large amount of information that can be gained from these sources. Handwriting is a complex process, so an understanding of how the psychological, neurological, and physiological states of a person affect handwriting is important when questioned documents are examined. Graphologists are trained to evaluate the expressive entirety of writing. This is a Zoom meeting; see Meetup for login details. PC

2p Monthly Gathering: “Forensic Linguistics: Language Issues in Three Murder Cases” with long time Mensan Joe Devney. Language is an important part of the legal system. A lot of evidence in court is language evidence. But linguistics, the formal study of language, is underutilized in American courtrooms. The subfield of forensic linguistics, or language and law, is concerned specifically with areas in which language and the law intersect. This talk uses three real-life murder trials to illustrate where a linguist could, or did, help interpret the meaning of evidence. This is a Zoom meeting; see Meetup for login details. PC
