MEET THE MEMBER

BETTY HAAS

SFRM’s Editor-in-Chief and Member at Large

What was the moment when you decided to become a Mensa member?
When I saw an ad for Mensa testing being held at the community college near me, in Fort Myers, Florida. (I had done well on a sample test as a teenager, when I lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, so I was curious to see if I could pass the real test.)

What is something we don’t know about you that you’d like to share?
The monthly cartoon I create, “Smart Alec”, is now also published by 22 other MENSA chapters, all across the U.S.  And I have been a finalist in the Gilroy Garlic Cook-Off 3 years in a row, cooking onstage at the festival.

What’s your favorite moment as a Mensan (or what is your favorite Mensa event)?
I love the RG’s. Meeting new people with similar interests, having fun and learning about subjects I would never think to study on my own like “How to Make an Oboe Reed.”

What’s your worst moment as a Mensan?
Long ago (and far, far away) I brought a guest to a Mensa dinner event, promising him a fun evening with stimulating conversation. But the small gathering was dominated by two obnoxious men who spent the entire time trying to one-up each other with how much they knew. Needless to say we left early. The positive side is that in my 3 years here with SFRM, everyone has always been great.

What’s the one suggestion you’d like to make to make Mensa better?
Just moving to the Bay Area has already made it better for me (see previous answer).

Where to find me
I am pleased to be the editor of the “Intelligencer” and I welcome any comments, suggestions or submissions you would like to send me. I am also a regular attendee of the Big Ideas Reading Group which meets the second Saturday of each month.

As a new member of the SFRM ExComm I look forward to meeting more people and doing whatever I can to help make our chapter a great one.
