28 – Tuesday

5:50p Dinner, Drinks, and Three Intelligences. Join us for drinks, dinner, and another great science-based Wonderfest presentation at the HopMonk Tavern, 224 Vintage Way, Novato 94945. We meet for drinks and dinner at 5:50p. At 6:50p we’ll move to the session room for the talk, “Three Intelligences” with Dr. Alison Gopnik, Distinguished Professor of Psychology at UC Berkeley. She is also Affiliate Professor of Philosophy at Cal, and a member of the Berkeley AI Research Group. A common model of AI suggests that there is a single measure of intelligence, often called AGI, and that AI systems are agents who can possess more or less of this intelligence. Cognitive science, in contrast, suggests that there are multiple forms of intelligence and that these intelligences trade off against each other and have a distinctive developmental profile and evolutionary history. Exploitation (the pursuit of goals, resources, and utilities) characterizes adult cognition. However, exploration (seeking information about the world) characterizes childhood cognition, and empowerment (of others, through care and teaching) characterizes cognition in elderhood. The combination of these three different kinds of intelligence, across the course of a life, explains human success. Complete details of this free event are at wonderfest.org/category/event/coming-events/. More information on HopMonk’s menu, etc. is here: www.hopmonk.com/novato. 2:30p Speaker Series: Silent Service: A Brief History of Submarines in the U.S. Navy with Robyn Weimer. On Zoom. As the U.S. Navy Submarine Force celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2025, this presentation will provide a brief history of submarines in the Navy and their contributions to the nation. Ms. Weimer, a 24-year veteran of the Submarine Force, served on four nuclear-powered submarines, with tours as Navigator/Operations Officer, Chief Engineer, and Executive Officer. She will first provide an overview of the history of U.S. submarines, from the purchase of the Holland on April 11, 1900, to the newest Virginia-class fast attack and Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines currently under construction. A discussion of submarine construction and operation will follow, including a review of submarine missions and how they are built to accomplish them. Along the way, Ms. Weimer will touch on what it’s like to live on a submarine, with some submarine force trivia, such as how it got the nickname “Silent Service”. Please register at livepresentation.link/NOV. You will receive a confirmation e-mail from Zoom that will contain the link needed to join the presentation. 5:50p Dinner, Drinks, and the Origin of Life. Join us for drinks, dinner, and another great science-based Wonderfest presentation at the HopMonk Tavern, 224 Vintage Way, Novato 94945. We meet for drinks and dinner at 5:50p. At 6:50p we’ll move to the session room for the talk, “Origin of Life” with Dr. Charles Marshall, Distinguished Professor of Integrative Biology at UC Berkeley. He is also Director of the University of California Museum of Paleontology. It’s an age-old question: How did life come about? Even the simplest creatures that exhibit the two hallmarks of life, namely metabolism and replication, are astoundingly complex. While the search for life’s origin has fascinated humans for centuries, recent breakthroughs point us in a more conclusive direction, and have remarkable implications. Among important side insights are the unexpected similarities between prebiotic and human innovation, and the central role that energy and information have played in transforming the planet over the last 4 billion years, leading right up to the present climate crisis. Complete details of this free event are at wonderfest.org/category/event/coming-events/. More information on HopMonk’s menu, etc. is here: www.hopmonk.com/novato. December 2 – Tuesday

5p Tuesday Tipplers. See November 4. (RSE 1 Tu)

5:50p Dinner, Drinks, Math, and Magic. Join us for drinks, dinner, and another great science-based Wonderfest presentation at the HopMonk Tavern, 224 Vintage Way, Novato 94945. We meet for drinks and dinner at 5:50p. At 6:50p we’ll move to the session room for the talk, “Math and Magic” with Dr. Tori Noquez, Asst. Professor of Mathematics and of Computer Science at Saint Mary’s College of California. Tori is a regular performer at Hollywood’s famous Magic Castle, and she has been featured on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Startling magic sometimes relies on deep mathematical principles. However, if the magician is doing her job, those principles should not be apparent to the spectator – unless the magician is a math professor giving a Wonderfest presentation! Combining the mathematics of playing cards with sleight of hand allows even more powerful magic to arise, can raise some intriguing mathematical questions, and can explore the creative process that leads to original card magic. Complete details of this free event are at wonderfest.org/category/event/coming-events/. More information on HopMonk’s menu, etc. is here: www.hopmonk.com/novato. RSVP on the SFRM Meetup (preferred) or e-mail Valerie Taylor (northbay/a/t/sfmensa.org). PC, NMPCW, WCE, NS, NC, NXM
