6p Movies That Matter. Up in the Air (2009). With all the stories that George Clooney is retiring, it seems a good time to revisit one of my favorite films of his. Clooney was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Ryan Bingham, who enjoys living out of a suitcase for his job, traveling around the country firing people. He literally holds that airliners are his home. But then he meets fellow free spirit Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga) and things get very complicated and very funny. Underneath the romance and the levity is a compelling commentary on life in modern America. The film was nominated for all the major Oscars (including two for Supporting Actress), but didn’t win any. 1:30p Robot Games at Woodside High School, 199 Churchill Ave., Woodside 94062. Student-designed and built 120-lb. (54-kg) robots place large cubes on balances; points are earned when balances are tipped in their favor, with more sophisticated robots placing cubes on taller balances. Every match is played as two Alliances of three teams each, starting with a 15 second “Autonomous” period where only the students’ programming controls the robot. As the match comes to an end, robots gain extra points by hoisting themselves off the field. Spectators are invited to tour the pits to see the robots up close and talk with students. Mensan Gary Koerzendorfer mentors FIRST Robotic Teams 972 from Los Gatos HS and 2643 from Santa Teresa HS. Carlmont HS team 199, seen at the 2017 RG, will also be there. The competition is free to the public and starts the evening of Friday, October 5, and continues the morning of Saturday, October 6, with playoffs and finals on Saturday at approximately 1:30p. 4p Big Ideas Reading Group : Life Unfolding: How the Human Body Creates Itself by Jamie A. Davies. (NOTE ONE-TIME CHANGE OF WEEK.) Where did I come from? Why do I have two arms but just one head? How is my left leg the same size as my right one? Why are the fingerprints of identical twins not identical? How did my brain learn to learn? Why must I die? A convergence of ideas from embryology, genetics, physics, networks, and control theory has begun to provide real answers. Based on the central principle of ‘adaptive self-organization’, it explains how the interactions of many cells, and of the tiny molecular machines that run them, can organize tissue structures vastly larger than themselves, correcting errors as they go along and creating new layers of complexity where there were none before. Providing an illuminating look at the life of trailblazer Ruth Bader Ginsberg – including her career-defining work in gender discrimination law – this engaging documentary charts her journey to becoming a justice on America’s highest court. Also included in the cast are Gloria Steinem, Bill Clinton, and Orrin Hatch. This film uses a combination of actual historical footage of her earlier years in college, marriage, raising her family even during her continued work to earn her law degree, and then being one of the early prime advocates for justice for ALL under the law.
