5 – Friday

6p Movies That Matter. Up in the Air (2009). With all the stories that George Clooney is retiring, it seems a good time to revisit one of my favorite films of his. Clooney was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Ryan Bingham, who enjoys living out of a suitcase for his job, traveling around the country firing people. He literally holds that airliners are his home. But then he meets fellow free spirit Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga) and things get very complicated and very funny. Underneath the romance and the levity is a compelling commentary on life in modern America. The film was nominated for all the major Oscars (including two for Supporting Actress), but didn’t win any. If you have seen it before, you’ll enjoy seeing it again. I know I did. Join us for an evening of pizza, picture, and a chance for thoughtful discussion. Pizza 6p, film 6:45p. Movies are shown on a 58″ plasma TV. For pizza, let us know your preference, meat or veggie, at (510) 451-3009 or daniel/a/t/joyfulharmony.org. Hosted by Daniel Neumayer and Gwendolyn Rothman, Harmony Center for the Joyful Spirit. Map and directions: www.joyfulharmony.org/contact. PC, NS, NXM (RSE 1,3 F)

6:30p First Friday in Danville. We’ll be at Luna Loca in Danville, a good Mexican restaurant in “The Livery” shopping center on San Ramon Valley Blvd. with good food, good prices, and good drinks. It’s pretty easy to get to: From I-680, take the Sycamore Valley Rd. exit, turn right on San Ramon Valley Blvd., and then take the first left (there’s a light) and Luna Loca will be on your right. Check their website at www.lunalocadanville.com for more information. I’ll make a reservation based on how many I think are coming, but please let me know if you’re thinking of attending so I can change the reservation. Call Donna Jadis at (925) 978-0690 or e-mail donna/a/t/mooseworks.org for more info. (RSE 1 F)

6 – Saturday

1p Monthly Gathering: Pinball and Pizza. Bring yourself or bring the whole family out for an afternoon of pinball, pizza, and fun! RSVP to mal1/a/t/sfmensa.org to let us know if you’ll be joining, so we’ll know approximately how much pizza to order. More details in the Monthly Gathering article elsewhere in this issue. Location: Free Gold Watch, 1767 Waller St., San Francisco 94117. PC, ACW

1:30p Robot Games at Woodside High School, 199 Churchill Ave., Woodside 94062. Student-designed and built 120-lb. (54-kg) robots place large cubes on balances; points are earned when balances are tipped in their favor, with more sophisticated robots placing cubes on taller balances. Every match is played as two Alliances of three teams each, starting with a 15 second “Autonomous” period where only the students’ programming controls the robot. As the match comes to an end, robots gain extra points by hoisting themselves off the field. Spectators are invited to tour the pits to see the robots up close and talk with students. Mensan Gary Koerzendorfer mentors FIRST Robotic Teams 972 from Los Gatos HS and 2643 from Santa Teresa HS. Carlmont HS team 199, seen at the 2017 RG, will also be there. The competition is free to the public and starts the evening of Friday, October 5, and continues the morning of Saturday, October 6, with playoffs and finals on Saturday at approximately 1:30p. Check M-News for any schedule updates. See www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZbdwYiCY74 for a brief “retro” video explaining the game and at www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtE6Va6oOhU “This Isn’t a Robot” shows the inspirational philosophy of FIRST Robotics. 7 – Friday

6p Movies That Matter . The Post (2017). I loved watching three great pros tell an important story that I didn’t know. Steven Spielberg directs Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in a thrilling drama about the unlikely partnership between The Washington Post ’s Katharine Graham (Streep), the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. The two must overcome their differences as they risk their careers – and their very freedom – to help bring long-buried truths to light. Rounding out the cast are Bob Odenkirk ( Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul ), and Bradley Whitford ( The West Wing ). Join us for an evening of pizza, picture, and a chance for thoughtful discussion. Pizza 6p, film 6:45p. Movies are shown on a 58″ plasma TV. For pizza, let us know your preference, meat or veggie, at (510) 451-3009 or daniel/a/t/joyfulharmony.org . Hosted by Daniel Neumayer and Gwendolyn Rothman, Harmony Center for the Joyful Spirit. Map and directions: www.joyfulharmony.org/contact .

(RSE 1 F)

September 15-21

15 – Saturday

4p Big Ideas Reading Group : Life Unfolding: How the Human Body Creates Itself by Jamie A. Davies. (NOTE ONE-TIME CHANGE OF WEEK.) Where did I come from? Why do I have two arms but just one head? How is my left leg the same size as my right one? Why are the fingerprints of identical twins not identical? How did my brain learn to learn? Why must I die? A convergence of ideas from embryology, genetics, physics, networks, and control theory has begun to provide real answers. Based on the central principle of ‘adaptive self-organization’, it explains how the interactions of many cells, and of the tiny molecular machines that run them, can organize tissue structures vastly larger than themselves, correcting errors as they go along and creating new layers of complexity where there were none before. We are meeting this month at Kepler’s , 1010 El Camino Real (at Ravenswood Ave.), Menlo Park 94025. Free parking below. For October 13, also at Kepler’s : Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom. We have a list of books read at www.bigideasreadinggroup.com/BIRG2.html . For questions and directions please contact Chris Boyd at snoboyd/a/t/sbcglobal.net . PC, NMPCW, NXM (RSE 2 Sa)

6p Movies That Matter . Lady Bird (2017). (No, not that Lady Bird.) I loved watching a unknown young star in this offbeat, funny, and touching tale. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated, and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home. PC, NS, NXM (RSE 1,3 F)

7p Movie Night in Orinda . RBG (2018). Providing an illuminating look at the life of trailblazer Ruth Bader Ginsberg – including her career-defining work in gender discrimination law – this engaging documentary charts her journey to becoming a justice on America’s highest court. Also included in the cast are Gloria Steinem, Bill Clinton, and Orrin Hatch. This film uses a combination of actual historical footage of her earlier years in college, marriage, raising her family even during her continued work to earn her law degree, and then being one of the early prime advocates for justice for ALL under the law. The acting is superior. Enjoy an evening with Mensa friends, other friends, or family members that you would like to invite. We’ll socialize both before the movie and during intermission. Please bring something to share. It is not a dinner, but salads are welcome, as are hors d’oeuvres, fruit, dessert, and light-colored beverages. Please reserve your seat with Mary Bradshaw, (925) 376-0762 or MaryBradsh/a/t/aol.com . PC, NMPCW
