Learn the concepts and tools to understand the causes and cure of psychopathology, become your own therapist, and help your friends and relatives with their emotional disturbance. Edelstein is a clinical psychologist. He has written four books, including Three Minute Therapy (with a foreword by Mensan Dr. Albert Ellis). 6p    Basic Economics Book Discussion: One chapter a week. We’re reading Basic Economics: A Common Sense Guide to the Economy by Thomas Sowell. Basic Economics is a citizen’s guide to economics, written for those who want to understand how the economy works but have no interest in jargon or equations. Sowell explains the general principles underlying different economic systems. In readable language, he shows how to critique economic policies in terms of the incentives they create, rather than the goals they proclaim. This is the first book for anyone who wishes to understand how the economy functions. This week we’re reading Chapter 9: Market and Non-Market Economies. 2p    Speaker Series: “An Essay on Autonomy and the Authoritarian Personality” with Harry Gael Michaels. Michaels will be reading an excerpt from his most recent book titled Coping with Life – A Study in Adaptation. The book should be coming out at the end of February. It covers views on religion, education, and psychology as ways for better coping with the challenges of child development and successful adult living. What prompted his interest, initially, is the dire situation we are currently in with respect to our democratic way of life. We are facing challenges that could alter significantly the way we view ourselves as a nation and the future of our progeny. 2p    Speaker Series: “An ABC Primer for the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)” with George Fuller. On July 26, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Fuller will discuss the ADA and why it took America so long to extend civil rights to its most significant demographic minority. During the discussion, he will introduce some of the critical components of the ADA and why they are of substantial importance for disabled people in the United States.
