6:30p Chinese New Year Near Palo Alto. By now it’s a tradition: Join us this month for a Chinese New Year’s celebration (the Year of the Rat begins 1/25/20). 6p Movies That Matter. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019) stars Al Pacino, Brad Pitt, Bruce Dern, and dozens more. Quentin Tarantino turns in a film that is wistful, funny, and complicated in interesting ways. The story takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood. The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), former star of a western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor…Sharon Tate. Tarantino mixes fact and “what if.” People Magazine: “Tarantino blends fantasy and real history here in an original and unpredictable movie that’s his best in years.” Two hours, forty minutes.
